Examiner strike - Union view13-11-2017
The PCS Union in DVSA have issued formal notice of industrial action to the DVSA involving all operational grades

The action they are calling for is as follows:

  • Indefinite action short of a strike commencing two weeks from today (Thursday 23rd November)
  • Two days of strike action which will take place on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th December

They are asking every member to support the action following the ballot result.

They state that for over two years PCS has sought to achieve 4 simple outcomes for members:

  1. The removal of the current travel time proposals and a better way forward to be found on this issue.
  2. The safety of our members and the public to be assured – and an agreement on rostering to be concluded - in respect of the new test due to commence on 4th December.
  3. A fair work life balance for our members, and an agreement that provides respect and fairness by their employer
  4. An end to the victimisation of PCS and our members which has gone unchecked for too long.

Their latest newsletter to members (see link below) talks about ‘the shoddy and arrogant leadership of the Agency’ and states that detailed guidance to members on action short of a strike will be issued soon.

When the result of the strike ballot was announced in September DVSA chief executive, Gareth Llewellyn, said:

“PCS members agreed to a new contract in April 2014 in return for a one-off payment and a three year pay agreement, so it is surprising that PCS are now objecting to the contract they had previously recommended to their members.

“We hope PCS members will accept our best and final offer, so we can start new negotiations on options for flexible working which will bring financial benefits for many of them.

“In the event of any industrial action, I know the vast majority of DVSA employees will continue to deliver excellent services for the customers who pay for our work.”

MSA GB members have not been very sympathetic to examiners some of the comments on social media have been

“I could not be so cruel, when they know first-hand the pressure the candidates are under and the distress the cancellation will cause the replacement tests will be next year!”

“Are you serious - going on strike the day the test changes. Plus on strike on the 5th too. I have a test on the 5th - she has been waiting 9 weeks for the big day - thanks lot."

“They [examiners] should be made to teach again for a few weeks, then they will realise how easy they have it. Government should do like they have with other agencies and make it illegal to strike. Now my pupils will have to wait till January for the next available date."
