Former DVSA Chief Driving Examiner Lesley Young has been recognised for her outstanding achievements in the 2019 New Year’s Honours. She has been awarded an OBE for services to Driver Training and Testing and Road Safety
MSA GB General Manager John Lepine said:
“I have known Lesley for over twenty years and have had various degrees of contact with her over that time. When she became chief driving examiner in 2012 my contact with her increased and I met with her at many meetings and conferences. I also have both phone and written contact with her on a regular basis.
“She has always been very supportive of the driving instructor profession attending conferences and meetings and taking the time to answer all the questions asked of her. She always responds in a forthright and honest manner, with a degree of humour that has been appreciated by her audiences. She has also displayed more grace in dealing with her occasional critics than they probably deserved.
“Under her guidance lots of beneficial changes have taken place to the way both driving instructors and learner drivers are trained and tested. Throughout the research and development of these changes she has fully involved all the major stakeholders and the Motor Schools Association of Great Britain have played a full part in working with Lesley and her team to bring about these changes.
“She has overseen updating and changes to the Approved Driving Instructor qualifying driving test and instructional ability test; the instructors test of continuing ability and fitness to instruct; the driving theory test and the driving test.
“Without doubt Lesley’s most important achievement has been to make the major changes introduced to the driving test without the need for legislation and without contravening EU directive rules. Her steady hand on the wheel has enabled her team to meet the challenge of change without adding to the regulatory burden. I believe that all the changes Lesley has overseen will have a positive effect on road safety for many years to come.
“Many congratulations Lesley a well deserved award.”
On Lesley’s award DVSA Chief Executive Gareth Llewellyn said:
“I am truly delighted for Lesley that her commitment to road safety has been recognised in this way. The design and launch of the new practical driving test last year was just one of a large number of achievements for which Lesley should justifiably be very proud.”
