Driving Safely Starts with Your Tyres

MSA GB is a proud partner of TyreSafe, supporting the Young Driver Campaign to help new drivers understand the risks of unsafe or illegal tyres and how to stay safe on the road. MSA GB members have full access to all campaign materials for use with learners, young drivers, and community initiatives.
About the Campaign:
This campaign aligns with the NPCC’s Fatal Four focus on young drivers and raises awareness about the importance of tyre safety. Neglecting tyre maintenance can have serious consequences—legal, financial, and most importantly, for safety.
TyreSafe’s latest research shows that nearly half of young or new drivers don’t realise they are responsible for the condition and maintenance of their tyres, regardless of vehicle ownership. The campaign educates new drivers on how to avoid these risks and make tyre safety part of everyday driving habits.
Partners & Supporters:
Developed by TyreSafe with support from MSA GB, Fresh Drivers UK, and FirstCar. This year, the campaign is also supported by the DVSA, Red Driving School, and runs in conjunction with the DfT’s THINK! campaign.
Campaign Objectives:
- Increase Awareness: Learn about legal requirements for tyre safety and the risks of unsafe tyres.
- Promote Responsible Driving: Adopt regular tyre maintenance habits.
- Highlight Consequences: Understand fines, penalty points, and licence implications.
- Support NPCC’s Fatal Four: Provide messaging tailored to young drivers.
Key Messages:
1. Tyre Safety is Essential:
Unsafe tyres can lead to fines, penalty points, or losing your licence. Regular checks are crucial.
2. Understanding the Law:
- Legal minimum tread depth: 1.6mm
- Driving with illegal tyres: fines up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre
3. Consequences of Neglect:
- Six or more points during the probationary period = licence loss
- Points carry over from provisional to full licences and impact insurance premiums
4. Practical Advice:
- Check tread depth, tyre condition, air pressure, and age
- Ensure first car tyres are safe and legal
Who Should Use This Campaign:
- Primary: New drivers aged 17–24, particularly in their first two years
- Secondary: Parents, driving instructors, and educational institutions
For Driving Instructors:
Driving instructors can leverage these materials to integrate tyre safety into lessons, workshops, and mock tests. Using posters, leaflets, and videos helps learners understand legal requirements, consequences of neglect, and practical maintenance tips—reinforcing safe driving habits from the start.
