BHS Road Incident Statistics & Dead Slow Campaign: Toolkit

The British Horse Society have today revealed that incidents involving horses and riders on UK roads continue to persist at a shocking rate, with 58 horses killed and 97 injured in 2024.

What does this mean for equine safety?

The statistics are particularly concerning as we commemorate three years since significant changes were introduced into the Highway Code for passing equestrians safely – this includes passing horses at no more than 10mph and leaving at least two metres distance.

As part of our Dead Slow road safety campaign, the BHS are encouraging road users to evaluate how they pass horses as well as how impactful passing them too closely and too quickly can be.

To do this, we will be offering guidance to motorists and equestrians throughout February.

We hope that you might be able to support us with sharing our core safety messages, as well as driving greater awareness amongst all road users as to how to pass equestrians safely.

We have shared a detailed pack (see attached) where you can find some helpful assets, top tips copy and social media suggestions. We also have spokespeople and further imagery available.

Any support you can offer will be invaluable to improving equine road safety and hopefully, stopping these tragic incidents from happening on our roads.
