DVSA- Tell us what it’s like working as an ADI in 2025

Every year DVSA run out national survey to find out what it’s like working as an approved driving instructor (ADI) in Great Britain.

The 2025 working as an ADI survey is now open!

It’s your annual chance to let them know what it’s like to work as a driving instructor in 2025. Last year, 5,620 of you completed the survey, just under 14% of all working ADIs.

DVSA know that you have been asked to give your thoughts on a lot of things in recent times and they understand that you might be a little ‘surveyed-out’. But it’s really important you give them your views so they can use your insight to feed into decisions.

They hope that even more of you will complete the survey this year to help them and the ADI associations better understand the challenges you are facing, and how they can help.

Getting a full picture of working as an instructor

DVSA know that the past few years have been challenging for the industry, particularly with the ongoing issue of driving test waiting times.

They know that it affects you and your businesses, and they expect it to feature heavily in a lot of your answers. But they would also like to hear about any other challenges you have faced or any that you are worried about in the future, so please keep this in mind when filling in the survey.

What’s in the survey

The survey is made up of questions to help DVSA and ADI associations to understand more about:

  • your business – including things like lesson prices and the type of car you teach in
  • managing your business – including things like how many pupils you’re teaching and any challenges you’re facing
  • your work – including things like how satisfying you find the job
  • your skills and the resources available to you – including things like the support you get from DVSA
  • your continuing professional development
  • your health and wellbeing

The survey does not ask for your name or ADI number. DVSA want you to feel comfortable to answer the questions honestly so all of the responses are anonymous and individual responses will not be shared or published.

How to take part

The survey takes 10 to 20 minutes to fill in. It closes at 11:59pm on 31 October 2025.

By filling in the survey, you’ll be helping to give them the fullest picture of the driving instructor profession in Great Britain’s history.

What happens next

As with previous years, once all of responses have been analysed DVSA will publish a summary of the survey results on GOV.UK and  a link to view them will be available  later in the year.

DVSA will use the information you tell them to help plan and improve their services for ADIs and learner drivers.
