RSGB Academy launches new Safe System course

Road Safety GB Academy has launched a new Safe System training course that aims to develop a practitioner’s strategic understanding of, and ability to, implement this proactive method of casualty reduction.

Safe System significantly differs from the previous approach as it recognises the role of human error in collisions and looks to mitigate this by ensuring that the pillars of the system, referred to as the layers of protection, are sufficiently robust to prevent errors from becoming catastrophic when they occur.

The Safe System course explores a range of subjects associated with implementing a Safe System, including: Safe Speeds, Safe Roads and Roadsides, Safe Vehicles, Safe Road Users and Post-Crash Response. It has a strong focus on the need to work in partnership, not only with road safety professionals but the wider community.

The learning outcomes are for the participant to have a greater:

  • Recognition of the need to move to a Safe System
  • Awareness of differences between a traditional approach to road safety and a Safe System
  • Understanding of how the different layers of protection need to work together
  • Awareness of potential partners
  • To consider how a Safe System can be applied

RSGB Academy offers the course as either a one or two day session.

The one day course has a strong focus on what a Safe System is and the importance of strategic partnership and leadership. This day is ideal for strategic leads or those seeking a strong understanding of the Safe System.

The two day course builds on the one day course and provides a greater understanding of the practical application of Safe System through the use of a number of case studies. This course is suitable for those who design or deliver road safety interventions.

The first running of the two-day course takes place via Zoom on 22-23 October 2025. Registration is now open.

Participants receive a RSGB Academy certificate.

Rhian Hughes, director of the RSGB Academy, said: “We’ve delivered several pilot courses so far, and the feedback from delegates has been positive. It’s helped us shape the content to ensure it’s not only practical and relevant, but genuinely useful for professionals working in road safety and active travel.

“I had the opportunity to attend one of the pilot sessions myself and found it valuable, it offered fresh insights and practical ideas that I’ve already been able to apply in my work.

If you’re thinking about arranging a session for your team or road safety partnership, we’d love to hear from you.

“The course can be delivered in person or online, and the Academy team is always happy to chat through any specific needs or preferences to make sure it works for you.”
