The DVSA are writing to let you know that the updated driving instructor code of practice has been published on GOV.UK.
The DVSA are committed to publishing the updated code in a recent blog post about how they are working with the training industry to help protect your profession.
The updated code has been developed jointly by DVSA and the driver training industry, including NASP.
The code will come into force in the upcoming months and they will confirm the date at a webinar about the code.
They’re publishing it now so you have time to read through it ahead of that date.

Why is the updated code important?
The driving instructor code of practice sets out how all driver trainers should behave to help raise the standards within the industry.
It also gives clear expectations to learner drivers about how their instructor should behave, the standards they can expect and who to go to if they aren’t met.
The driver training industry helped design this code and organisations including NASP support both the update and the move to make it mandatory.
This is about raising the standards and status of the profession, supporting instructor livelihoods and helping keep roads safe.
It is not about catching people out.
What the code sets out
It sets out clear standards and behaviors that all driving instructors must follow, helping to protect the profession and give learner drivers a consistently high standard of instruction.
The code uses plain-English tiering so it’s easy to understand what’s expected:
-Must – what is required
-Should – what is strongly recommended
-Could – what is good practice

They are running a joint webinar with driver training associations later in the year, where you’ll be able to put questions directly to DVSA and industry representatives. They’ll confirm the date and how to join in a separate message.
